A lot of time, when I'm fishing down stream with wets or nymphs, and I want to pick up some action, I'll find a spot where there is a soft bottom, and shuffle my feet. This will stir up the bottom and send some sweet tid-bits to the fish in the lower pool.
A lot of times I don't cast after my initial cast and just work my fly along with the colored water. It's almost like chumming without the chum. Every time we move in the water I'm sure we are stirring up things that fish feed on.
This little trick I found by accident. Try it, it might work for You!
